What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

SIL is a type of NDIS-funded support that provides help with daily tasks in a shared or individual living arrangement. It is designed for people with higher support needs who require assistance throughout the day (and sometimes overnight) to live as independently as possible in a home environment.

What types of support are provided under SIL?

SIL services include help with:

  • Personal care (showering, dressing, grooming)

  • Meal preparation and planning

  • Household tasks (cleaning, laundry)

  • Medication prompts

  • Behavioural or emotional support

  • Building independence in daily routines
This support is tailored based on your individual needs and goals.

Who is eligible for SIL?

SIL is available to NDIS participants with high or complex support needs who require ongoing assistance at home. Eligibility is determined by the NDIS and usually follows a formal assessment, including a Functional Assessment and a quote from a registered SIL provider.

What’s the difference between SIL and SDA?

SIL (Supported Independent Living) covers the support you receive in your home, while SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation) relates to the physical housing itself. You can receive SIL in an SDA home, a private rental, or a family home—depending on your needs and NDIS funding.

How do I apply for SIL funding?

To apply, you’ll need supporting documentation, including a Functional Capacity Assessment and a SIL quote. Your Support Coordinator or LAC can help you gather this information and submit a request to the NDIS. We can also assist in preparing reports and assessments to support your application.
