What is a Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA)?

A Functional Capacity Assessment is a comprehensive evaluation that examines an individual’s ability to perform daily tasks across various areas, including self-care, mobility, communication, cognitive function, and social interaction. It helps identify strengths and challenges, offering a clear picture of what supports or interventions may be needed to enhance independence and quality of life.

Who needs a Functional Capacity Assessment?

Functional Capacity Assessments are useful for individuals with a disability, chronic health condition, injury, or mental health concern that affects their ability to function day-to-day. It’s commonly requested by the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) to support funding decisions, care planning, and access to services.

What does the assessment involve?

The assessment typically includes a face-to-face or virtual interview, observation of daily task performance, and a review of relevant medical or therapy history. The Occupational Therapist will ask about the person’s daily routines, challenges, goals, and support systems. Standardised tools and professional judgement are used to ensure a thorough and objective evaluation.

What is included in the final report?

The final FCA report is a professionally written document outlining the individual’s current level of functioning, support needs, risks, and recommendations. It includes measurable outcomes and justifies the need for supports or services. This report is often used for NDIS applications, plan reviews, or as supporting evidence for allied health or medical professionals.

How can I organise a Functional Capacity Assessment?

You can book a Functional Capacity Assessment by contacting us directly or through a referral from a support coordinator, GP, or allied health professional. We’ll schedule a time that suits you and guide you through each step of the process—from assessment to report delivery.
