What is Adult Mental Health Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy for mental health focuses on helping adults manage their emotional well-being while improving everyday functioning and independence.
It involves therapeutic strategies that support individuals in engaging with meaningful daily routines, roles, and activities. These may include personal care, managing a household, returning to work or study, and building social relationships—all while supporting mental health recovery.

Who can benefit from this type of therapy?

Adults experiencing mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, PTSD, or stress-related challenges.
Occupational Therapy can also benefit individuals facing difficulty with motivation, coping skills, time management, or those struggling to maintain routines or engage with their community. The approach is person-centered and tailored to each individual’s strengths, goals, and challenges.

What happens during a therapy session?

Sessions are personalized and practical, focusing on real-life challenges and goals.
An OT may work with you on developing routines, improving emotional regulation, setting daily goals, or building confidence to return to work or social activities. Sessions can include planning strategies, skill-building exercises, mindfulness techniques, or even community-based outings, depending on your needs.

How is this different from counselling or psychology?

While counselling focuses on emotional expression and thought patterns, OT focuses on how mental health impacts daily function and practical living.
Occupational Therapists work alongside psychologists or counsellors, focusing on “doing” — helping you build skills and habits that support recovery. It’s more hands-on and goal-directed, often bridging the gap between mental health and independent living.

How can I access Adult Mental Health OT services?

You can access services through NDIS funding, GP referral, mental health plans, or private booking.
Contact us at Happy Breeze Therapy Services to discuss your needs. We’ll help you navigate the process, starting with an initial consultation and assessment to create a therapy plan that aligns with your personal goals and recovery journey.
