What is a Supported Independent Living (SIL) Assessment?

A SIL Assessment is a professional evaluation by an Occupational Therapist to determine a person’s ability to live independently and what level of support they require. It looks at skills like cooking, cleaning, personal care, safety, and decision-making to assess how much help is needed and in what areas.

Who needs a SIL Assessment?

Individuals with disabilities who are seeking Supported Independent Living under the NDIS typically require a SIL Assessment. It is often used as supporting evidence in NDIS applications or plan reviews to justify the need for shared or individual supports in a supported living environment.

What does the SIL Assessment involve?

The assessment includes interviews, functional assessments, observations of daily tasks, and discussions about your goals and routines. The Occupational Therapist will consider your current skills, support systems, and environment to determine the best support model for your needs.

What is included in the final SIL report?

The SIL report includes a summary of functional abilities, support needs, risk factors, and recommended level of support. It is written to align with NDIS requirements and is used to support funding applications, housing options, or decisions around shared or individual care.

How do I access a SIL Assessment?

If you are an NDIS participant and SIL is part of your plan—or you believe it’s needed—your Support Coordinator, Local Area Coordinator, or planner can help you request a SIL Assessment. You can also contact us directly, and we’ll guide you through the referral and assessment process.
